cupCongratulations! You’ve just added an awesome tool to your Health Coaching practice: The Food Diary!

The Food Diary is a must-have worksheet for structuring your client sessions. When a client tracks his/her food, mood and hunger level on the Food Diary worksheet, it is a starting point for the two of you to have a “day-in-their-life” conversation about both “primary” and “secondary” food.

As a coach, you will find that your clients’ completed daily Food Diary provides clues and pieces of their unique puzzle to help uncover food sensitivities and create awareness of their relationship with food.

Use the Food Diary tool with all of your clients to help them make “good, better and best” changes to their food and lifestyle choices and keep them on track toward reaching their goals.

How To Use The Food Diary Worksheet
When you review your clients’ Food Diary entries, you’ll see how they rate their hunger level on a scale of 0-5, with 0 being “not at all hungry” and 5 being “starving.” If clients are eating at a hunger level of 0, that’s a clue for you to find out why they are eating at that time. Discover is part of your coaching skills!

For example, based on the answers to the Food Diary, you will ask your clients: What’s going on emotionally or physically for you when you eat at that hunger level? What might you be seeking from food? What “Primary Food” might be missing? (The Food Diary has fill-in-the-blank areas for these answers, too!)

Add this worksheet to your coaching practice! It will help you guide your clients through a session and will help your clients better understand themselves and their relationship with food.

Other clues you will get from using the Food Diary:

  • If your clients are eating at a level 5 (starving), how can they be more proactive about their food choices and timing so they don’t put themselves in that situation?
  • Use your coaching prompts with the Food Diary. Ask where they were when they were eating — in the car? At their desk? While talking on the phone?
  • What physical symptoms or emotions were they experiencing before, during and/or after they ate?
  • How much water did they drink that day?
  • How strenuous was their physical fitness activity?
  • What was their biggest challenge that day or evening? What were they grateful for?

Use the Food Diary to help your clients become more aware of their food habits, their “emotional eating” and their connections between what, when and why they eat.

This essential tool is very powerful for helping your clients track their day-to-day feelings and food intake – such necessary steps to helping you be the most effective coach you can be!

You will love this tool! I used it yesterday with one of my clients. We talked about why she was “mindlessly” eating before dinner time, while talking on the phone with her mother!

The Food Diary worksheet eliminates any anxiety you might have about what to do in your coaching session! It gives you the information and the guidance to feel confident and know what to do and how to help your clients!

The Food Diary worksheet is a favorite tool, and I’m thrilled to offer it to you!

I’d love to hear how the Food Diary worksheet and Crave Coaching Essentials help your clients! Please share on our Facebook page or drop me an email at sandy@cravemarketing.net!
